Human API: Empowering Human-Driven Health Data Access and Usability

2023-01-31T04:30:22-06:00

I sometimes describe Human API as the Plaid or PayPal for health care data. While these analogies may not fully hold up yet, I envision a future where humans like you and me can easily use our health data in ways that feel similar to how we can use our financial data to transact (think using PayPal for an eBay checkout or connecting your bank account to Venmo with Plaid). A world where there’s a transparent, simple and unified way for people to access and share their health data to accelerate innovation is a world where more people can live longer, healthier lives. I built Human API to help make this new world a reality sooner. We believe that giving people full control of their health data helps create [...]

CommonWell TV 2022: Data Quality & Its Role in Health Equity

2023-01-31T04:30:22-06:00

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) health equity is achieved when every person has the opportunity to “attain his or her full health potential” and no one is “disadvantaged from achieving this potential because of social position or other socially determined circumstances.” Having a complete view of an individual’s clinical data is vital to achieving this. During CommonWell TV 2022, we asked our members to reflect on this very important topic by asking this question: Why is data quality critical, not just to improve data exchange, but to improve equity in health care? Read below for their responses and watch this year’s CommonWell TV videos here. Data quality underpins everything we all want to accomplish. If data is missing from a message, coded in a [...]

CommonWell TV 2022: Because of Interop, by 2030

2023-01-31T04:30:22-06:00

During CommonWell TV 2022, we took a page from the U.S. Health & Human Services Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT and asked our members to speculate on the future of interoperability by asking them to finish this statement: Because of interop, by 2030… Read below for their reactions and watch this year’s CommonWell TV videos here. Personalized medicine will improve to a significant extent. Remote patient monitoring will take off to a different level. Patient ownership of data and understanding will increase therefore there will be a huge influx of solutions that allow people to use and improve their health by 2030. —Venkat Timmaraju, Founder & CEO, Oprable What’s more important is not what will happen but what should happen. In the next eight years, I would [...]

CommonWell TV 2022: Health IT Execs on TEFCA

2023-01-31T04:30:23-06:00

While there are regional and national interoperability hubs like CommonWell working at scale across the country, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT’s (ONC) recent Trusted Exchange Framework and the Common Agreement (TEFCA) aims at pushing the health IT industry to certify these hubs as highly scalable, highly secure utility grade systems and connect them via standardized exchange practices and patient search capabilities. TEFCA is asking entities that meet the set of qualifications it is now drawing up to become Qualified Health Information Networks (QHINs), which will work to connect with other QHINs to vastly expand interoperability across the United States. What does this mean for CommonWell and its members? CommonWell intends to be in the first wave of QHINs and is eagerly awaiting the final agreement including [...]

I’m Building My Personal Health Record with OneRecord: Here’s Why it Matters

2023-01-31T04:30:25-06:00

I was first diagnosed with Lyme disease when I was seven years old. No one knew at the time that this diagnosis would be the start of nearly two decades of illness, of new diagnoses, and of managing my health. I have always been more than my illness, but my experience living with chronic illness has shaped my life and my identity. It’s also inspired me to use my voice to share my story and to empower others to do the same, whether they have a chronic illness or not.
