CommonWell is Banking on Nationwide Interoperability

2023-01-31T04:35:28-06:00

Many health IT industry experts have compared the evolution of health care interoperability to the banking industry, particularly in regards to the ATM network. Did you know that it took more than 50 years for Universal ATM access to be established from the time the first ATM was invented in 1939? [1] Or that multivendor software was only running on 28 percent of ATMs worldwide in 2012? [2] If we dig deeper, we discover that one of the challenges merchants and banks faced as the ATM system started to take off in the late 1980’s was dealing with the multiple standards being used. Sound familiar? Just take a brief look at their 50-year journey to see what it took for us to be able to access our money from almost any ATM. 1939 [...]

Record Locator Services – helping to connect your health history to your current health care

2023-01-31T04:35:31-06:00

Do you remember using the internet in the mid-1990s?  Before search engines had been invented?  Before you had Google, Yahoo, Altavista, and so on?  How much harder was it to find stuff on the internet?  Did you use the Web as much as you do today?  Was it even practical for you to do so? Health records face a similar predicament now as the internet faced back then. Today, there are millions of electronic files and reams of records across thousands of medical facilities in the US alone. Rarely is it that one person goes to the same doctor – or even the same medical center – for all of their health care needs. Most patients’ records are scattered throughout various medical systems and doctor’s offices all across hometowns and [...]

A New Era

2023-01-31T04:35:34-06:00

After decades of churn, burn, progress and regress, the forces of technology and business are slowly but surely zeroing in on what should have been obvious in the first place: health and care need to be centered around the Person. When a patient or a provider wants to know the patient’s health and care history, they should not be limited to the data available on the local EHR. They should have easy access to a 3-dimensional view of the patient—which should include the patient’s health data from wherever care has occurred, along and across the health care continuum. CommonWell Health Alliance is making this a reality. We are devoted to the vision that health data should be available to individuals and providers regardless of where care occurs. Imagine you’re a [...]

CommonWell’s JASON Task Force testimony: A shared vision for a national “Robust Healthcare Architecture”

2023-01-31T04:37:08-06:00

On July 31, I delivered testimony to the JASON Task Force and posited that the CommonWell Health Alliance can fulfill the vision of a national “Robust Healthcare Architecture” as expounded upon in the JASON Report, discussed more below. By way of background, members of the JASON Task Force consists of a subset of the members of the HIT Standards Committee (HITSC) and HIT Policy Committee (HITPC), organized by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC), and aimed at synthesizing the feedback to the JASON Report. The JASON Report observed that health information exchange today is inadequate both in breadth of adoption and in usage towards the Triple Aim – better care, improved health of populations and lower per capita costs. The report strongly suggests that a new [...]

Welcoming new members to CommonWell Health Alliance

2023-01-31T04:37:10-06:00

Today, CommonWell Health Alliance officially opens its doors to institutions who are committed to our vision that health data should be available to individuals and providers regardless of where care occurs, and that access to this data must be built into health IT at a reasonable cost for use by a broad range of healthcare providers and the people they serve. Just over a year ago, the Alliance was formed with an unambiguous focus on rapidly demonstrating real-world data exchange and mitigating execution risks for our members and providers as early as possible. As such, we put a high bar on members’ commitment, so that membership would be centered on self-selected health IT companies who chose to heavily invest time, effort and resources to incubate and launch CommonWell and its [...]
