CommonWell-Carequality Connection Now Generally Available!

Today, we at CommonWell are excited to share a milestone achievement along the path to solving for nationwide health IT interoperability: we announced the rollout of our connection to the Carequality Framework, which is now Generally Available to CommonWell members and will increase health IT connectivity nationwide. Not only do we anticipate that this increased connectivity will contribute to improvements in patient care coordination, delivery and outcomes, but we are already seeing it in action as our members and their initial pilot clients have taken the connection live and have since regularly exchanged health data. As we knock down yet another barrier to true nationwide interoperability, we consider the value this will bring to both providers and patients and recognize that this is in large part thanks to the dogged [...]

What Summer Vacation?!? Connecting to Carequality

While families headed to the beaches, children caught fireflies and parents counted down the time until school was back in session, we at CommonWell have had a very productive summer. There are many updates we are excited to share via our blog in the coming weeks, but the most frequent question I receive is “how is the connection to Carequality going?”. And so, I thought I would provide this update first, answering that question with one word: Great! This is not to say that there isn’t still work to be done, but we have made significant strides over the past few months. For example: CommonWell has met all Carequality requirements to move into production. Cerner and Greenway Health have a handful of initial providers live on the connection, allowing us [...]

Nationwide Care Transitions: Empowering the Provider, Empowering the Patient

More than 2.5 million passengers fly domestically in the US every day. How many of those people do you think remember to bring their health records with them in case of emergency? While I don’t know of any source tracking that statistic, my personal experience would lend me to believe it is very few. This time of year, it feels like even more people are traveling - holidays, business trips, a welcome escape from this brutal winter. And it also feels like this time of year is when most people come down with a cold, flu or something worse that requires them to seek medical attention. What happens when those two collide – when you are sick or injured while traveling far from home? Most likely you feel out of [...]

2018 Update: The Power of Many

Sometimes I forget that I am the only full-time employee of the Alliance. You can easily see why that is if you read any of our most recent blogs. CommonWell is a community effort, and our members are also our leaders, our innovators and our biggest advocates: Morgan Knochel from one of our newest subscribers – OneRecord – shared her personal journey through the health care system as she became her own patient advocate and ultimately benefited by being one of the first patients to access her health records via CommonWell. MEDITECH, Brightree and Change Healthcare wrote about their leadership in building and leveraging FHIR in their software to exchange data through CommonWell. Nick Knowlton, our membership chair for the past four years and a past and current executive at [...]

Context Matters: health data access that helps our First Responders

National Health IT Week is a time to reflect on the impact of health IT in the U.S. – on the system and the individuals we serve. What struck me about the role of HIT this year was the poignant plight of evacuees in the face of disaster. From wildfires in Montana and California to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria throughout our southern states and territories, adversity forced thousands of Americans out of their homes and their communities. During natural tragedies like these, we immediately think about the loss of life, property and basic amenities like power and water. We don’t usually think about the loss of access to data, because it seems like a relatively minor inconvenience. But when individuals are in acute life situations – whether their health [...]

Summer Update from the CommonWell Executive Director

It’s hard to believe that 2017 is already almost half over. The CommonWell team –a dogged group of volunteers with unmatched passion and determination (for interoperability of all things!) – continues to lay ever-more-pipeline to facilitate health data exchange nationwide. Mark my words: being an open, collaborative, vendor-neutral organization is not easy. How I miss the corporate days when I had my own resources and could set my own priorities, and could more or less bring everyone else for the ride whenever I was ready to share what we’ve been up to. Of course, I’ve traded off that level of nimbleness for the impact that we get through collaboration. In the four years since we first birthed CommonWell as a game-changing “Little Engine That Could” organization, we’ve grown from a [...]

CommonWell and Carequality to Increase Health IT Connectivity Nationwide with New Collaborative Agreement

The belief that collaboration is a key part of success is not a new one, especially when it comes to achieving nationwide interoperability in healthcare. We have always been dedicated to working together across the industry to break down the barriers to interoperability, which is why we are excited to share CommonWell Health Alliance and Carequality are increasing nationwide health IT connectivity by providing additional health data sharing options to the over 15,000 hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare organizations actively deployed under the Carequality framework or CommonWell network. The agreement outlines three objectives: CommonWell will become a Carequality implementer on behalf of its members and their clients, enabling CommonWell subscribers to engage in health information exchange through directed queries with any Carequality participant. Carequality will work with CommonWell to make [...]

Soon You Will Be Able to Access Your Own Health Data Thanks to CommonWell and Its Members

From the beginning, CommonWell has been dedicated to a simple but crucial vision and underlying belief that health data should be available to individuals and providers regardless of where care occurs. After all, how many times have you arrived at a doctor’s appointment, only to have a clipboard handed to you to fill out your entire medical history, emergency contact information and information about other specialists you have seen? It has probably happened more than a few times, and with each handoff of the clipboard, you likely longed for a better way or wondered how it would all get taken care of in the event that you couldn’t fill out those forms yourself. At CommonWell, we believe that health data, regardless of where treatment occurs, should be available at your [...]

CommonWell Services Already Providing Value to Providers, Clinicians Nationwide

Since the inception of CommonWell, our focus has been to initiate real change and tangible value to the health care industry through our real-world interoperability services. Today, we have accomplished what many have not been able to–simplifying the process for connecting care for both providers and the people they serve. Our members began their nationwide deployment of CommonWell services in the fall of 2015 and I’ve had the opportunity to meet with many of their providers all over the country to hear about how our services are stacking up. One of the requests I’ve heard time and time again was the need to know what other providers are using CommonWell services. While it seems like a simple request, its complexity lies in the fact that CommonWell doesn’t own this information; [...]

Making it real

From the beginning, CommonWell Health Alliance has always been about doing something real. Serving real care givers; with the data they really need; to care for real people. That has always been, and continues to be, our goal. It humbles me to see the great amount of work our member companies are putting forth to further our shared mission. In the first half of this year, we tackled a big “boulder” in making national interoperability a reality, by recruiting a number of key HIT organizations into the Alliance. In fact over the course of 2015, our membership grew such that we now represent 70% of the acute care market place and roughly a quarter of the ambulatory marketplace, and a substantial presence in other care settings as well. While that [...]
