The Faces for Interoperability: Building consensus to break down silos to deliver high quality care

2023-01-31T04:37:15-06:00

Everyone has a story when it comes to the complexity of the health care system. Especially when it comes to accessing and connecting health records. But what good is a great story, if you don’t have someone to share it with. That’s why we launched the Faces for Interoperability effort (aka #ForInterop). Through social media accounts like Twitter and Facebook and direct submissions at CommonWell Health Alliance’s HIMSS booth (#1389), more than a 100 people already have shared their story and support for seamless interoperability across the health care system. We love this shot of Janet Marchibroda, Director of Health Innovation Initiative, Bipartisan Policy Center, and her simple statement “Make Health Data Available”. Because isn’t that what we all want?! Or this one from Margaret posting about her father and [...]

And Now There are Nine.

2023-01-31T04:37:15-06:00

It is the first morning of the HIMSS14 exhibition and in CommonWell fashion, we are unleashing BIG NEWS. You may have seen our news reported yesterday of all our service launch clients going live AND expanding our services to additional locations, including national health system, Tenet Healthcare. But there’s more – we are now pleased to report that CVS Caremark and MEDHOST have joined as contributing members to the CommonWell Health Alliance. We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome and start working with the nation’s largest pharmacy chain and a tenured enterprise IT supplier with an established customer base. Our work together starts today. Read the full releases on our website or come by our booth #1389 or MEDHOST’s booth nearby at #747 to learn more. Speaking of our booth, [...]

All a Buzz About Our First Anniversary at HIMSS …

2023-01-31T04:37:15-06:00

Since CommonWell Health Alliance took the stage the first day of HIMSS last year to announce our vendor-led collaboration around seamless interoperability, we have been repeatedly asked – what can you do at HIMSS14 that will exceed the buzz you generated in 2013? Our answer has always been the same. Prove it works. And that is exactly what we intend to do. So, while we don’t want to shed too much light on our updates, efforts and just general cool stuff that we will unveil at HIMSS, we did think it would be fun to provide a sneak peek at what we have been up to during the last year and what you can expect to see more of at our HIMSS booth # 1389. For the seven founding members [...]

A Shared Vision of Improving Efficiencies and Saving Patients’ Lives

2023-01-31T04:37:16-06:00

It’s been nearly seven months since Sunquest joined CommonWell Health Alliance. I can say that as the Alliance has progressed and its members have deepened their involvement, it has been a privilege to experience and be a part of it. Just the same as the day we joined, Sunquest is dedicated to achieving interoperability for the common good. We remain committed to improving patient safety by developing, delivering, and supporting expert software solutions that fully automate lab operations and diagnostic processes across the continuum of care. We remain committed to promoting a national infrastructure with common standards and policies and ensuring that our products have been certified to work on the national infrastructure. Along with CommonWell and other members of the alliance, Sunquest has embarked on proof of concept pilot [...]

A Year of Promise and Fulfillment

2023-01-31T04:37:16-06:00

Onstage in New Orleans at HIMSS13, the CommonWell Health Alliance was announced. While presenting the goals and intent of the initiative, the five CEOs within the health IT industry were met with wide media reaction, praise from supporters such as the Bipartisan Policy Center, and admittedly, a dose of skepticism by a few. Could these market competitors across acute and ambulatory segments live up to the embrace? Was it all for show? Could they really get anything done and so on. I recall McKesson CEO John Hammergren deeming the Alliance an “inflection point in health care.” Now as HIMSS14 approaches and CommonWell plans to focus on announcements and initial successes in Orlando matching those goals and intent, I think we can call the combined achievements of the past year a [...]

What Interoperability and CommonWell Mean for Rural Health Providers

2023-01-31T04:37:16-06:00

Our presence in 48 states, and the community hospitals and providers we serve, made the goal of seamless EHR interoperability a top priority for CPSI. The emergence of CommonWell Health Alliance answered the urgent need for patient information exchange and was the driving force in our becoming a member in 2013. Many of CPSI’s customers are located in a rural area, and face the challenge of sharing patient records every day. Regularly, community hospitals and their medical staff have tertiary referral needs that are hours away. When transferring their patients to an urban provider, it is imperative that all the vital medical information is immediately accessible. With the help of CommonWell, not only will the essential medical information be readily available to the referring provider, but in many instances, it [...]

More Than a Vision: The CommonWell Health Alliance in 2014

2023-01-31T04:37:17-06:00

To appreciate how important it is for the health care system to change, we need only think about the care we want for our loved ones. Most of us have a parent or grandparent or sibling or spouse who has a need for more than one doctor, multiple prescriptions and a large care team. Rich Elmore, our acting vice chair, recently shared his own personal story of experiencing limited and untimely access to health information at critical junctures and I know there are many people with a similar story. How can we be sure that the care they receive is coordinated across all those providers and actually helps improve their condition? As people who work in the industry, we understand all too well the gaps and disconnects that can occur, [...]

Finding Gratification Through My Work with CommonWell

2023-01-31T04:37:17-06:00

I have always found enormous value in what I do at work. For nearly 15 years, I have been in the connectivity business and have seen the benefits a connected health care ecosystem can provide communities, providers and patients. At Cerner, we have been providing health care solutions for our clients on how to better capture, access and apply health data for more than three decades, but we knew that until the industry broke down the necessary barriers and obstacles that prevent us from sharing and accessing health data, we as an industry would not be able to truly provide the best care possible. Enter in the CommonWell Health Alliance. Since the launch of CommonWell at last year’s HIMSS, it has been gratifying to see the response of my peers [...]

What CommonWell Health Alliance is Doing is Personal and Its Important

2023-01-31T04:37:17-06:00

Patients need this. I know personally how important work like CommonWell's can be to patients in the health care system. I'd like to share a brief personal story. My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer a little more than a year ago. It was a tough year - very challenging. We were facing life or death decisions and needed our care team's guidance. The care team consisted of a primary care doctor in a private practice that had one EHR, a surgical oncologist in a private practice on another EHR, a medical oncologist using yet a third EHR, and a second opinion team in a totally different geography that had a fourth different EHR. This is the real world of fragmented care delivery and dispersed geographies that we live in [...]

Closing Out a Year of Work & Collaboration, Moving to Launch Phase

2023-01-31T04:37:18-06:00

As CommonWell enters 2014, it’s critical that we, its founding members, translate our enthusiasm for interoperability as a common good into clear value for the health care industry. Early in the year, we will begin to show the world that the underlying workflows we’ve been developing across each of the founding members’ platforms are progressing, and most importantly, will become the information rails from which information will flow and patient care will improve. CommonWell’s work will have tremendous impact on the patient and provider experience. Health care as it exists today is, from the patient’s view and for too many providers also, largely a paper-based process. This is in stark contrast to being digitally equipped and backed in so many other aspects of our lives. By making interoperability a living, [...]
