CommonWell Services Already Providing Value to Providers, Clinicians Nationwide

Since the inception of CommonWell, our focus has been to initiate real change and tangible value to the health care industry through our real-world interoperability services. Today, we have accomplished what many have not been able to–simplifying the process for connecting care for both providers and the people they serve.

Our members began their nationwide deployment of CommonWell services in the fall of 2015 and I’ve had the opportunity to meet with many of their providers all over the country to hear about how our services are stacking up. One of the requests I’ve heard time and time again was the need to know what other providers are using CommonWell services. While it seems like a simple request, its complexity lies in the fact that CommonWell doesn’t own this information; our members do. However, we understand how important this information is and have worked long and hard to make it more easily accessible to our members’ providers. Today, we’re excited to unveil a new map identifying provider sites currently using CommonWell services across the country.

As you’ll see on the map, CommonWell services are live in all 50 states, the District of Columbia (D.C.) and Puerto Rico, with a number of regions quickly becoming early adopters across their health systems including Delaware, North Carolina, Northern Arizona and Seattle. We now have nearly 8,000 provider sites committed, including 4,400 provider sites live on the services.. Not only are CommonWell services being used nationwide, but there are more than 3.5 million individuals enrolled and uniquely identified in the CommonWell network.  These numbers, which are growing every day, represent real people and providers who are beginning to benefit from CommonWell and our efforts to improve nationwide interoperability.

Stephen Anderson of Therapeutic Associates is an example of one of those providers. Already, he’s noticed that with the help of CommonWell and athenahealth, Therapeutic Associates has been able to meaningfully participate in health data exchange with providers across the Pacific Northwest to share patient information. Though they are just beginning to leverage this opportunity, they are excited for the potential.  Anderson feels that the connection to physicians, nurses, case managers, and others will improve their care plans, patient education and clinical outcomes.

Cullen Linn has also starting seeing the value of CommonWell. As the Senior Interoperability Architect for Northern Arizona Healthcare, he appreciates the improved access to clinical data that CommonWell brings to the organization’s providers and clinicians but more so the transparent fashion in which is provided. Linn, the acting chair of the newly established CommonWell Advisory Board—which was started to ensure the voices of providers, staff and patients are captured in all that we do—is also in a unique position to deliver essential feedback to CommonWell as we continue to improve our services.

I’m proud to be a part of an organization that is the first and only national network to facilitate patient-centric query and retrieve of clinical chart data, driven and supported by cross-vendor development and implementation. Together, we’re making a difference in the way care is delivered, and the best part is, we’re just getting started.
