CommonWell Provider Advisory Council

Formed in 2016, the CommonWell Health Alliance Provider Advisory Council ensures that the voices of providers, staff and patients are captured throughout all CommonWell efforts. Current members include:

Douglas Rahn, Council Chairman & Beebe Healthcare representative

Douglas Rahn, RN, Project Manager for Beebe Healthcare, coordinates the strategic planning of IT projects for the organization, oversees the Meaningful Use program and serves on several health exchange committees. With 30 years of experience in health care, Doug serves as the CommonWell Project Manager for both inpatient and ambulatory practices at Beebe Healthcare, routinely works with the CommonWell development teams and is the hospital’s liaison to the Delaware Health Information Network (DHIN), the first operational statewide health information exchange. He graduated from the Reading Hospital School of Nursing and obtained his Lean Six Sigma Certification in Healthcare from Villanova University.

Deana Simpson, Council Vice-Chairman & St. John Providence representative

Deana Simpson, RN, is the VP of Transformation Development at St. John Providence, an Ascension Ministry in Detroit. Deana is responsible for innovating and integrating technology into clinical practice and developing strategies and programs for adoption and optimization activities that supports evidence and promotes population health. She participates in the visioning and implementing of technologies to connect care across the care community ensuring information exchange is clinically relevant, easy to consume, and actionable. She has oversight for the acute care and ambulatory EHRs and the ambulatory revenue cycle management system and processes. Deana earned her nursing degree from Ferris State University, her Bachelor’s degree in business/program development from Oakland University and is currently pursuing her Master’s in Nursing, specializing in Nursing Informatics, from American Sentinel University.

Ryan Joyce, Ascension representative
Ryan Joyce, MHA, Director of Data Interoperability for Ascension Information Services, is responsible for the management and development of interoperability products and solutions to meet the increasing velocity of clinical and population health requirements, and alignment with Ascension’s strategic direction. He also has spent time at Cerner Corporation and Denver-based SCL Health System. Ryan holds a Masters of Health Administration degree from Washington University in St. Louis, and a B.S. in biological sciences from the University of Missouri. His first real job was as a high school science teacher on Chicago’s South Side; it’s still the hardest job he’s ever had.

Arthur Lauretano, Circle Health representative
Arthur M. Lauretano, M.D., M.S., F.A.C.S. is the Chief Medical Officer for Circle Health, based in Lowell, Mass., and the Medical Director of the Lowell General Hospital Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Center. He is a board-certified otolaryngologist/head and neck surgeon, practicing at Massachusetts Ear, Nose, and Throat Associates and operating primarily at Lowell General Hospital. He teaches Otolaryngology at Boston University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School. Arthur graduated Boston University’s Six-Year Medical Program, received a MS in Health Informatics and Management from the University of Massachusetts Lowell and is board-certified in Clinical Informatics from the American Board of Preventive Medicine. He is the author of Do the Right Thing: A Surgeon’s Approach to Life.

Jeffery Belden, Tiger Institute & University of Missouri representative
Jeff Belden, MD, is a family physician and Professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He serves as Medical Director of Interoperability at the Tiger Institute for Health Innovation, a technology collaborative between the University of Missouri and Cerner. He also serves as Medical Director for Innovation at the Tiger Institute. He is the Founding and Former Chair of the HIMSS EMR Usability Task Force and a current member of the HIMSS HIT User Experience Community. Jeff was lead author of Inspired EHRs: Designing for Clinicians, a guide for EHR usability, online at He has a special interest in improving the EHR user experience and in the visual display of information.
