CommonWell Announces Launch Geographies and Participants

2023-01-31T04:37:18-06:00

CommonWell Health Alliance is thrilled to announce today that we are launching our interoperability services in early 2014 at select provider locations in the following geographies:  Chicago, Illinois; Elkin and Henderson, North Carolina; and Columbia, South Carolina. Just 9 months and 1 week ago, we announced CommonWell at HIMSS13, and today, we are proud to share that we are making a huge leap in bringing our cross-supplier data liquidity services to market. As a health IT supplier-led effort, we have the vision that patient data should be available to the patient and their health care providers regardless of where the care occurs or what health IT system the provider uses. Representing a variety of different settings, participating customers of the alliance members who have signed up for the initial launch [...]

Members and RelayHealth ‘Connect’ for the Common Good

2023-01-31T04:37:18-06:00

There are twenty-seven acronyms in Margalit Gur-Arie’s “History of Healthcare Interoperability.” 27! (That’s nearly 2% of the article.) She keeps a straight face throughout the piece, but it reads almost like a parody—the interop landscape is complicated. Byzantine, even. As you know, the CommonWell Health Alliance aims to straighten this all out. Once health IT systems can communicate seamlessly with each other, healthcare providers will have easy, fast, and secure access to the clinical history for their patients, patients won’t be frustrated by filling out the same paperwork over and over, human error will be mitigated, and care will improve for everybody. With that in mind, I’m very pleased to report that we watched the national health IT ecosystem move substantially closer to that vision of real, sustainable interoperability [...]

Introducing our Board of Directors

2023-01-31T04:37:19-06:00

As you may have seen this morning, CommonWell Health Alliance is officially an incorporated trade association and with that comes the election of our Board of Directors. As I said in our press release, I am proud and very fortunate to have such a talented group of individuals joining me on the Board. We have been working collaboratively for the last eight months to help break down the barriers of health data exchange. I write this as the Alliances comes off of a working session in Denver, where our member companies demonstrated tremendous progress both on the operational and technological front. It is such an exciting time to be a part of this effort and I can’t wait for us to share more at HIMSS in February about our pilot [...]

Football, Pumpkins and Health Care Conferences

2023-01-31T04:37:20-06:00

It wouldn’t be Fall without a series of health care events taking place around the country. In a recent post, we talked about the great CommonWell conversations that were had at the member user conferences for Sunquest, Allscripts and Greenway. But it doesn’t stop there, CPSI and McKesson hosted their user conferences these past couple weeks, and this week, Cerner is busy celebrating the Chiefs undefeated record…and hosting their conference to 10,000 attendees in Kansas City. The CommonWell member teams are busy on the road and thrilled to be sharing the progress of the Alliance with our user communities. Continue reading to hear how CPSI and McKesson’s user conference went and be on the lookout for more details to come on CommonWell at the Cerner Health Conference. CPSI National User [...]

The Business Model for Interoperability

2023-01-31T04:37:20-06:00

Much of the recent discussion around making interoperability a widespread success has shifted from technical standards and capabilities to business dynamics. In its August report, Principles and Strategy for Accelerating Health Information Exchange and Advancing Interoperability, the Department of Health & Human Services puts it front and center: “Both providers and their vendors do not yet have a business imperative to electronically share person-level health information across providers and settings of care that exceeds the cost of doing so.” And in the eHealth Initiative’s most recent survey of more than 100 established HIEs, “developing a sustainable business model” and “competitive positioning in the marketplace” outweighed “addressing technical barriers” as their top challenges. This is all good news in terms of consensus that transport and content standards — from Direct to [...]

The Value of Health IT

2023-01-31T04:37:21-06:00

As an Alliance of health IT suppliers, it is probably pretty obvious that we see tremendous value in the use of IT solutions in the health care system. We have all seen firsthand the benefits an electronic system can deliver for providers, patients, payers, pharmacists, laboratories and the like. And the introduction of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was the fuel to spread health IT and broaden the range of individuals to experience these benefits. However, for those in charge of delivering health care, it is an uphill, disruptive journey that, at times, feels like there may be no end. Like any industry that is in the middle of a transformation like the one health care industry is facing today, there is bound to be frustration and uncertainty [...]

Member Companies Share CommonWell Update with User Communities

2023-01-31T04:37:21-06:00

Whew. I think we at CommonWell are asking the same thing many of you are… just where did the summer go? Well, for most of our member companies, it was time well spent, not only working hard on our CommonWell efforts, but also preparing for the members’ client conferences across the country. For Sunquest, Allscripts and Greenway, they are just getting back to their daily routine after hosting high-energy user conferences that spanned the nation this past month. Hosted in Scottsdale, Chicago and Washington, DC, their conferences were the first of many member events to take place this fall. In fact, CPSI kicks off its national conference today in Mobile, Alabama. As highlighted below, the CommonWell Health Alliance continues to grow our services in support of national exchange of health [...]

Seven is the magic number.

2023-01-31T04:37:21-06:00

Tom and I are excited that CPSI and Sunquest are now part of the CommonWell Health Alliance. Both our organizations are committed to achieving interoperability for the common good and look forward to this collaboration, which includes being among the seven companies working with service provider RelayHealth in the Alliance’s upcoming pilot program. For more than 30 years, CPSI has been dedicated to meeting the health IT needs of rural and community hospitals. In this time, we’ve seen hospitals and providers make the largely-successful transition from paper to electronic health records. We’ve kept pace with technology advancements and envision a future where health care data silos no longer a hurdle and patient data is easily (and securely) accessible by providers and patients alike. During those same 30 years, Sunquest has [...]
