Moving Closer to True Person-Centered Interoperability

With the bipartisan legislation known as the 21st Century Cures Bill being drafted in the U.S. House of Representatives, which includes mandates that systems be interoperable by the end of 2017 or face reimbursement penalties, the conversation continues around how we can push interoperability forward even faster. And, that’s the right conversation. Person-centered interoperability is essential to our industry’s health reform transformation because data is driving value-based arrangements for care. As information becomes readily available when and where it’s needed, organizations can facilitate care coordination, drive physician alignment, reduce administrative complexity and engage patients in their care to ultimately accomplish population health. It’s the third and final day for the Exhibition at HIMSS15. For those of you at the conference, this probably means your feet are aching, your body would like a bit more sleep and your mind is racing to figure out how you are going to make it to all the booths you have yet to see before the show ends. CommonWell at HIMSS15 in Chicago

For most people in America, this week is all about ensuring you filed your taxes on time and figuring out what you are going to spend your return on, if you were lucky enough to have one. But for those of us working in health IT, this year, it is also about being in Chicago participating in HIMSS15. We at CommonWell Health Alliance love this time of year. Focused hard work, a game-changing service offering and a shared collaborative spirit across members – that is what has made today’s announcement regarding CommonWell’s nationwide expansion possible. I am extremely excited by the prospect that CommonWell is well on its way to making a difference for our fragmented health care system.  As the chair of the CommonWell program management committee, I get to engage with our members – all fierce competitors in their day-to-day lives – as they begin to roll-out the CommonWell services nationwide. This unprecedented initiative has already resulted in more than 60 provider sites live on CommonWell services across 15 states. And we are just getting started. CommonWell Welcomes Kareo, MEDITECH, Merge, PointClickCare & SIS!

Spring has certainly been busy on the membership front at CommonWell. We recently announced new members just a few weeks ago and today it is my pleasure to share more great news. Kareo, MEDITECH and Merge have joined the Alliance as contributing members. PointClickCare and Surgical Information Systems (SIS) have joined the Alliance as General Members. A New Era

After decades of churn, burn, progress and regress, the forces of technology and business are slowly but surely zeroing in on what should have been obvious in the first place: health and care need to be centered around the Person. When a patient or a provider wants to know the patient’s health and care history, they should not be limited to the data available on the local EHR. They should have easy access to a 3-dimensional view of the patient—which should include the patient’s health data from wherever care has occurred, along and across the health care continuum. CommonWell Health Alliance and CPSI

CPSI became a member of the CommonWell Health Alliance following its launch announcement at HIMSS13. We immediately assigned various CPSI employees in the role of working with other Alliance members from the other EMR vendors with the task of developing a seamless interoperability service. Our involvement since the launch has been a rewarding journey leading up to HIMSS15. Immediately after HIMMS13, Alliance members had several face-to-face meetings and many more conference calls during the remainder of 2013 as a solution was developed and the Alliance became a working entity; all with volunteer support from the membership! All the hard work and dedication to the project resulted in the announcements of a Pilot Service being demonstrated in several separate geographies beginning in the 1st quarter of 2014.
