BOSTON – September 13, 2023—CommonWell Health Alliance commits to network expansion and service enhancements in preparation for the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA) and the next phase of interoperability. As part of this commitment, it is announcing a new Technical Service Provider, long-time Alliance member ELLKAY. TEFCA—which will be made up of Qualified Health Information Networks (QHINs)—is a common set of principles, terms and conditions designed to take the nationwide exchange of electronic health information to the next level.

“The foundation of CommonWell was established ten years ago on innovation,” said Paul L Wilder, Executive Director of CommonWell Health Alliance. “As the industry continues to evolve, this new partnership will allow us to elevate our services and improve network efficiencies—which are key as we continue the onboarding process as a candidate QHIN.”

The new relationship will benefit CommonWell Service Adopters by:

  • Simplifying the onboarding process for health IT vendors and their clients.
  • Increasing the level of automation when querying the CommonWell network to make data retrieval more efficient and effective.

Ajay Kapare, ELLKAY President and Chief Strategy Officer, said, “We are thrilled to be chosen as the service provider for CommonWell Health Alliance on their journey to become a designated QHIN under TEFCA. ELLKAY will combine our more than 20 years of expertise to ensure that clinical data is shared seamlessly and securely across the healthcare ecosystem as CommonWell and other QHINs become the backbone to achieve universal interoperability. We look forward to connecting the clinical data needed to improve care coordination.”

CommonWell has built and scaled a dependable vendor-neutral nationwide health data exchange network utilizing an efficient Record Locator Service. Founded in 2013, the network today exchanges roughly 30 million documents each week and serves more than 34,000 health care organizations. The Alliance recently surpassed more than two hundred million unique individuals with health data being shared on in its nationwide network—roughly 62% of the total United States population.
